New Year’s Eve in the Marlborough Sounds
What’s going on, Internet? New Year’s Eve was mostly spent in transit. Martinborough to Wellington, a supermarket stop to stock up, the ferry across the cook strait, then the final drive into the Marlborough Sounds. The kids slept in the car, were wide awake to see the year roll over, then crashed again not long after. It was cold, the sandflies were relentless, and we welcomed the New Year with bubbles, beers, and snacks.
New Year’s Day stayed wet and cold before turning humid. The kids were bundled up in jackets and gumboots and taken for a walk along the beach anyway. The sun did eventually make an appearance for the rest of the stay, which was welcome. One of the highlights was the Tennyson Inlet summer picnic. BBQs, activities, and a long afternoon of just being there.
I loved cutting through Tennyson Inlet, a remote arm off Pelorus Sound. It’s quiet in a way that feels earned. Cruising past forested hills and open water, stopping at isolated beaches, and watching our host dive at the mussel farms to fill a sack straight from the source was a highlight.
When it was time to leave, the car was packed the night before and we were up early to make an 8am sailing back to Wellington. After the ferry ride it was back on the road, heading north again, the Sounds already starting to feel distant.
